Using Essential Oils For Nasal Discomfort

Nasal discomfort is common.
Whether is it a morning thing or a result of dust, it is irritating and can make you downright miserable.

There are two common types of nasal challenges that bring about discomfort.

Nasal Congestion
It is usually a result of nasal and adjacent tissues / blood vessels becoming swollen with excess fluid and hence causing a “stuffy” plugged feeling.

Excess Nasal Drainage
Also known as a “runny nose”, this is often a result of excess nasal drainage. It may be thin clear, thick mucus or something in between. The discharge may exit via your nose or down the back of your throat or both.

Sniffing, swallowing or blowing your nose may help ease the discomfort. Having said so, now that your nose is not at it’s best, take extra care to do it gently.
It is good to stay hydrated. Drinking water may also help thin out excess fluid. Saline sprays may loosen thick mucus.

Avoiding known triggers and irritants is important. For example, not going into a dusty environment, staying clear of cigarette smoke and sudden temperature / humidity changes.

Role Of Essential Oils

Essential oils may also help bring relief. Strong / minty essential oils such as Peppermint or Eucalyptus Radiata may help soothe airways.

A number of essential oils also support a healthy inflammation response and is likely to bring further comfort. You can diffuse the essential oil or add it in a basin of steam for steam inhalation.

The Bottom Line

Essential oils may provide support during times of nasal discomfort. Having said so, it is important to use essential oils responsibly and seek medical attention when necessary.
