Frankincense – Boswellia carterii, is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia in the family Burseraceae. It is tapped from the scraggy hardy trees by slashing the bark and letting the resin flow out. These harden and become known as tears. Frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula for more than 6000 years and it is very popular.
The tree reaches a height of up to 8 m and may have multiple trunks. The bark has a paper like texture and hence can be removed easily. The leaves are compound and the flowers are a yellowish white color and grouped in clusters. The fruit is shaped like a capsule about 1 cm in length.
