Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare is a flowering plant species and it belongs to the carrot family. It is a hardy and enduring herb. It is native to the shores of the Mediterranean.
Fennel has yellow flowers and feathery leaves. It grows to about 2.5 m in height and has hollow stems. The leaves grow to around 40 cm in length and are threadlike about 0.5 mm wide. The flowers grow in terminal umbels around 5 – 15 cm wide. Each umbel contains around 20 to 50 tiny flowers. The fruit is a dry schizocarp around 4 – 10 mm in length and about 2 – 5 mm in width.
